Greek loan via Old Church Slavonic, Vasmer 1986, I:61, Georgiev et al. 1971:4; from Common Slavic *pı̆kŭlŭ. Vasmer identifies this as related to Lat. pix, picis 'pitch, tar, hell' and Greek < *pikja; cf. Vaillant's derivation from Lat. picula 'pitch, tar', both in Vasmer 1987, III:226. Cf. Mladenov 1941:537, relating this to Common Slavic *pek- 'bake, roast', i.e. sinners roast in hell.
